The Reluctant Traveler

So if you know me you know that I hate change.. I hate travel.. I hate anything new.. I like my comfort zone..

With that said when I met Scott almost 15 years ago I am pretty sure I told him my feelings as well as my desire to never move from my home state of New Jersey.

Yet somehow in those 15 years we have moved from NJ to Kentucky, Indiana, South Carolina, Maryland, New Mexico, Arkansas, Texas and now Argentina.  I am sure that during those moves I was anything but grateful for the change.

As we have moved around we have explored as only my husband likes to do..

In Argentina Scotts main goal is to see as much of the country and South America as possible, so it seems we travel non-stop, every free long weekend we go.  It is neverending and sometimes seems more like a chore than enjoyment.. (to me)

This weekend we went to Puerto Madryn to see penguins/sea lions/dolphins and other creatures that call this part of Argentina home for a few months of the year.  This is our 4th trip this year..  Including 12 days to Peru.. we haven't had a real weekend to just veg out... so you know that on Friday while packing and going I might not have been so excited....  BUT while we were walking around the penguin area on Saturday I was suddenly aware of it all (the penguins, the beach, the beauty, the two happy girls giggling at penguins) and I turned to Scott to say thank you.. I am such a reluctant traveler but yet he has pulled me along on so many adventures and I while I may not always appear it, I am thankful.

and we are off...
punto tombo.. home to a very large population of penguins... I just figured they would all hang on the shore..
but no.. they walk around and say hi.. this little guy was giving us quite a welcome song..

and they live in holes under bushes on the sandy 'beach' area...
nola get up close and personal...
like humans they make sure they look good before presenting themselves

after walking and seeing about 1,000 penguins we find the beach.. where the parents go and get food for the babies

the penguins are ridiculously cool... the holes they live in go on for miles inland and there have to be 2,000 we saw.. more hiding.. the penguins babies are teens this time of year.. so they are still fuzzy but shedding..

all that walking with the penguins made us hungry for a proper welsh tea time in the city of Gaiman.  Princess Diana had tea here in this tea house 20 years ago...

to ring in turning 41 we went and saw the dusky dark dolphins which come to Puerto Madryn for only 4 months of the year..  it was awesome.. we saw maybe 20 dolphins swim and play off the side of the boat for a few hours.. didn't get very many photos as they are super fast and as I told the kids.. it isn't about the photo.. its about the memory
yeah.. he loves being 39 while I sit here at 41 just waiting for him to catch up

Our next stop had a beach.. the water was cold but the girls took advantage of the sun and sand while they could

our last stop was the sea lion cove.. I realized I didnt get many good photos of the sea lions as they were hiding it was so windy and cold.. the waves had taken a baby off shore and we watched as the mom tried to help it come ashore.. it was a struggle and the mom finally gave up and left the baby in the water.. we hoped that high tide would come soon and help the baby ashore..

Carnivale

So in South America carnivale is a big deal. And when I say big deal I mean every small town hosts carnivale and here in Argentina you get 2 days that are considered national holidays to celebrate.

In Gualeguaychu it is held for several weeks on a Saturday leading up to the main holiday.

Below.  Some pictures.  Please try and not judge me for what my children might have seen or really in this case did not see. (Much clothing.  Lol)

For 20 pesos you can try on costumes of years before carnivales.  According to both girls they weigh a ton. Like 20 pounds.
 Sporting our carnivale crowns.
Front row.  When and if we do this again it will be front row all the way

And the parade starts. (10:25 pm.   )

Always with me and the boy trying for a cute selfie

Three local teams work 10 months on costumes and floats for the parade and each is more spectacular than the next

Representing the pacchu mama. Or Mother Earth

Those heels.  1.5 hours dancing in those heels.  On a light show night. Can last up to 6 hours.

Each costume was more magnificent than the next.

The pope.  He is well loved.

This weekend we go see the Penguins down south for a much more tranquil of trip.
