Mexico City or Bust

so after a hot 5 days at home from Sri Lanka it was time for our family vacation to Mexico City and man was my husband looking forward to relaxing, eating tacos, touring the city.. and basically for like 4 days he had that.. and then he didn't.. so here are the highlights...

Murals in the Mercado de Murals.

first day we pound the Mercados hard on a walking tour.  Tons of amazing food I didn't photograph and so many stalls of things to buy.. more pinatas than I could ever dream of, flowers that go on and on for the length of many foot ball fields and just life and stuff and I loved it all!

more murals

the voodoo market...

so many different types of mole.. was hard to pick a favorite.. some contain up to 150 ingredients and aren't written down.. just in the memory of a lovely grandma

stalls of all sorts of Mexican candies and treats!

and veggies for DAYS!!!!  all so amazing in color and type.. so many varieties..

right outside our door on day 2 was an amazing local street market that we definitely did not miss going to.. We tried all sorts of yummy foods and even bought fruits and snacks for the apartment!!

Corn with mayo, cheese and spice.. I am still not sure what I think about it.. though I think I like it..

Bella Artes

I have a thing for cathedrals and I have a thing for floors.. this place ticked all my happy boxes

Day 3...  we hit a tiny taco shop in the Mercado Cayoacan

best tacos in my life..

Frida Kahlo Home.. so beautiful..   gardens outside and a small look into the life she led with her husband.

cheesy kids..

her bedroom and art studio were up several stairs.. how she managed I don't know.. but truly amazing!

the kitchen.. spectacular colors

so while expat life is hard.. this was easy and I am so thankful that it happened.... Cora was able to see her good friend Marcelle who moved to Mexico City..   her mom is a dream and drove her all of the way to our place for chatting and dinner..  man that filled our hearts with happiness

such happiness can't be contained in one picture..

so day 4 I think.... Scott had planned for us to have a GREAT experience making our own shoes with a local shoe maker that does work in Colombia and Mexico using recycled products and fabrics made by indigenous people called molas.  The company is www.motalas.com.mx and we had the best time..

Nola designing her own shoes with the expert designer

45 years this gentlemen has sewn shoes...  4 people work in the shop making up to 15 pairs of shoes a day

expert cutter

Cora taking her turn

Cora's finished product.. we all love our shoes and have worn them... such a neat experience...

and then we come here... day 4.5..  me having what I think is a stroke.. Checked into Hospital Espanol to be admitted for 2 nights (there go Mexican wrestling and salsa making class)!!  But blown away by how amazing the staff was, the care was incredible..  And so many friends had been there... one had her baby there.. so I knew I was in good hands!!!!  While it sucked to be away from my girls and Scott and we missed so much.. I was really thankful for the care I received.

but the food sucked...

not even a breakfast taco??

Released with the diagnosis of hypertension, having had a few mini strokes in my past according to my MRI.   And who would have guessed.. focal epilepsy..  so it is time to take  care of me.  As I am approaching 46 in this post I need to get my ass in gear or as I was told.. don't and suffer..

I am surely do a do-over of Mexico City.. I feel like there was so much more I want to see and do.  The city felt comfortable and safe... I couldn't have asked for nicer people to have run into during our travels, tours and hospital stay.
